CHAIRMAN BERNANKE Good afternoon, everybody. We’re meeting today to review the final rule implementing the Debit Card Interchange provision to the Dodd-Frank Act. We’re approaching the one-year anniversary of Dodd-Frank. The Federal Reserve has been given substantial and important new responsibilities under this act, and we have been working diligently to implement the statutory requirements under our purview. The interchange rule we are considering this afternoon has been one of our most challenging rulemakings under Dodd-Frank to date. We received well over 11000 comments on our proposed rule. We have taken the time needed to review these comments carefully. They’ve been very helpful to us, and the final rule reflects a number of changes suggested by the commenters. I believe the final rule that we will discuss today gives careful and appropriate consideration to the statutory language, the cost data available to us, and the complexities of the

Fission is the New Fire

Google Tech Talks April 16, 2007 ABSTRACT There are many common misconceptions about nuclear power that can be proven to be false, even among people with a variety of opinions. For example, it is often stated that nuclear power plants are very large and cost at least a couple of billion dollars. However, ever since there have been nuclear power plants, there have been some that have been small enough to fit inside submarines. One of those submarines is only 12 feet in diameter and could fit on half of a football field. It has also been said that nuclear power plants must operate at a nearly constant power level, yet they can power both submarines and aircraft carriers through extreme maneuvers….

Allied Victory in World War II Documentary: D-Day to VE Day (WW2 Film 1945)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org The True Glory was a 1945 co-production of the US Office of War Information and the British Ministry of Information, documenting the victory on the Western Front, from Normandy to the collapse of the Third Reich. Although many individuals contributed to the film, British director Carol Reed is normally credited as the director. The film was promoted with the tagline, “The story of your victory…told by the guys who won it!” It won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The documentary is notable for using multiple first person perspectives as narrative voices, somewhat in the manner of Tunisian Victory, except this time, instead of just an American GI and a British Tommie, the voices include a Canadian, a French resister, a Parisan civilian family, an African-American tank gunner, and several female perspectives including a nurse, and clerical staff. The film is introduced by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe, and many other prominent individuals appear in it including General George S. Patton. The Allies of World War II were the countries that opposed the Axis powers during the Second World War (1939–1945). Former Axis states contributing to the allied victory are not considered Allied states. The Allies became involved in World War II either because they had already been invaded, were directly threatened with invasion by the Axis or because they were concerned that the Axis powers

Lady of Burlesque: Barbara Stanwyck, Michael O’Shea and Iris Adrian (1943 Movie)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Lady of Burlesque (also known as The G-String Murders and in the UK, Striptease Lady) is a 1943 American mystery film starring Barbara Stanwyck and Michael O’Shea, based on the novel The G-String Murders written by famous strip tease artist Gypsy Rose Lee (with ghost-writing assistance from mystery writer Craig Rice). The plot concerns the murder of two strippers, backstage of a New York burlesque theatre and the detection of the killer. The film is a faithful, if sanitized due to the censorship of the time, adaptation of the original novel, although Gypsy Rose Lee, who appears as a character in her own book, is here renamed “Dixie Daisy” (Stanwyck). Michael O’Shea plays her romantic interest, comedian Biff Brannigan, and Iris Adrian portrays a showgirl. Pinky Lee, a burlesque comic in real life, is another notable supporting player, as is Gerald Mohr as villain Louie Grindero. The film depicted as much as the censors would allow with respect to the precise nature of “bumps” and “grinds”, and the slapdash nature of burlesque shows. Songs include “Take it off the E string, play it on the G string”, rendered by Stanwyck. Barbara Stanwyck (July 16, 1907 — January 20, 1990) was an American actress. A film and television star, known during her 60-year career as a consummate and versatile professional with a strong screen presence, and a favorite of directors including Cecil B. DeMille, Fritz Lang and Frank Capra. After a short but
